Pack 407 Pinewood Derby racing rules
The offical BSA pinewood derby kit #17006 must be used.
The car weight shall not exceed 5.0 ounces.
No loose material of any kind may be used for adding weight to the car.
The overall length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.
The overall width (including wheels and axles) of the car shall not exceed 2 3/4 inches.
The overall height of the car shall not exceed 3 inches.
The car must have 1 3/4 inch clearance between the wheels.
The car must have 3/8 inch clearance underneath the body.
The wheel-base (distance between front and rear axles) may not be changed from the kit body distance of 4 3/8 inches.
The block may be shaped any way that is desired.
Official BSA wheels from the kit must be used.
The wheels may not be cut, drilled, beveled, notched or rounded.
You may remove the seams and imperfections from the wheels.
Offical BSA axles from the kit must be used.
The axles may be polished and lubricated.
Only dry lubricants such as graphite or powdered teflon "white lube" will be allowed.
Wheel bearings, washers or bushings are prohibited.
The car must not ride on any type of springs.
The car must be freewheeling, with no starting devices.
Details such as the steering wheel, driver, decals, painting, and interior detail are permissible as long as these details do not exceed the maximum length, width, and weight specifications
Cars with wet paint will not be allowed to race.
No part of the car may extend beyond the starting post when placed at the starting location.
Each car must pass inspection by the official inspection committee before it will be allowed to compete.
Once a car passes inspection and is entered into the race, only race committee members can touch it.
Each Cub Scout may enter only one car into the Pinewood Derby.
The car must have been built during the current year.
If, during a race, no car reaches the finish line on the track, the car which went the farthest in its lane shall be declared as the heat winner.
If a car jumps the track, the heat will be run again. If that same car jumps the track a second time it loses the heat.
If a car leaves its lane and interferes with another car, the heat will be run again. If that same car leaves its lane and interferes with another car it loses the heat.
If a car becomes damaged, the race will be delayed no longer than 5 minutes for repairs. The car must be re-inspected before returning to the race.
Only members of the race committee may enter the track area.
